PRISON RAPE ELIMINATION ACT (PREA)

Congress passed the prison rape elimination act of 2003 (PREA) which applies to every person incarcerated in federal or state prisons, jails, private facilities, lockups, juvenile facilities and immigration detention centers.  The law applies to several forms of sexual violence, including coercion by other incarcerated at our facilities or coercion by staff.

The Hendry County Sheriff’s Office corrections division has established a zero tolerance for inmate sexual assault/abuse.  Every effort will be made to provide inmates with a safe, humane and secure environment which is free from sexual assault/abuse.  All incidents of sexual assault/abuse by other inmates incarcerated at the Hendry County sheriff’s office jail facility or by staff shall be reported.  All inmates will watch an orientation video within their first 30 days of incarceration.  This video includes general inmate information as well as PREA information.

Inmates have several methods in which to report a sexual assault/abuse.  Members of the public may make a report by contacting professional standards unit at 863-805-5009.
